Electronic assistance can help, but it cannot replace observation, judgement, appropriate speed, safe following distances, good tyres, proper seat-belt use, and responsible driving.

The best way to benefit from modern safety technology is to understand what your vehicle actually has.

Take a few minutes to read the safety section of your owner’s manual. Look through the vehicle settings. Find out what the dashboard warning symbols mean. Learn whether your car has emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane assistance, driver monitoring, adaptive cruise control, or other systems.

Most importantly, learn their limitations.

A safety feature that you understand is far more useful than one you don’t know exists.
