Cat S vs Cat N Cars: Which One Is Actually Safe to Buy?

What Do They Really Mean and Should You Buy One? If you have ever searched for a second-hand car in the UK, you have probably noticed something interesting. Two cars can look almost identical, have similar mileage, the same engine and similar specifications, yet one can be several thousand pounds cheaper. Then you notice a small but very important detail in the advert: “Category S”  or  “Category N.” For some buyers, those letters immediately mean “stay away.” For others, they represent an opportunity to buy a much newer or better-equipped car for considerably less money. So what do these categories actually mean? Are Category S and Category N cars dangerous? Why do insurance companies write cars off when they appear perfectly repairable? Is a Category N better than a Category S? Can you insure them? Will they pass an MOT? And most importantly,  should you actually buy one? The answer is not simply yes or no. A Category S or N car can potentially be a ...

Škoda’s Secret Genius: The Hidden Umbrella, Ice Scraper, and Everyday Engineering Tricks

Škoda Auto is one of those car brands that quietly builds reputation not through flashy gimmicks, but through small, intelligent ideas that make daily driving easier.

While other manufacturers compete on screens, horsepower, and luxury branding, Škoda hides its creativity in places most people don’t even think to look.

Skoda's Secret Genius

The result is a set of “wait… that’s actually useful” features that feel almost like cheat codes for real life.

The Hidden Umbrella in the Door

https://images.openai.com/static-rsc-4/Y26fFirm5FiD1tnGurG5N5eOKa-tN4tJXi5oDol98Xg4uupBqN4zi82MC2QMNbGAVRIw6OS6Bv_aYeylubhgcGwkSoXBX3KHOa6pXQ3v4ojGyAzn1w-vSt_U45Iokgt5PALhmmEpBqbEGn02SYjYk8Fqym0INIcB9fF97ruH8e1l0M2Ft-abwH-5qV8z2C7K?purpose=fullsize

One of the most famous Škoda tricks is the built-in umbrella inside the driver’s door.

It sounds almost unnecessary until you actually experience it:

  • A sealed compartment inside the front door
  • A compact umbrella stored securely inside
  • Designed so water drains away, preventing mildew or smell
  • Easy one-hand access when you step out into rain

It’s especially clever because it solves a problem people accept as “normal inconvenience.” Most drivers just run to the boot, forget an umbrella entirely, or get soaked while scrambling.

Škoda simply asked:
“Why not just put the umbrella where you actually exit the car?”

The idea originally appeared in higher-end Škoda models like the Superb and has since become a signature “Simply Clever” feature.

The Ice Scraper Hidden in the Fuel Flap

https://images.openai.com/static-rsc-4/cmOtayZZ-pVo_FpzEYyf-XJ7_Pr7r4HHKdvtDPWTBeFqe1KzMNPq3xgPu1USXvoZh-MVKOTak8yzcOb-qVo3r_W8xyf2GJYpArHnrBcMMflUihF7TfuGYxKi_49epJE0updDNTDnY2UtbllF1AFc7EfeuP5suxRBAVXRZt3UWZNl-ZIJnjfChQk3F5vQYIJj?purpose=fullsize

If the umbrella is charming, the ice scraper hidden inside the fuel filler flap is pure winter survival logic.

On cold mornings, most drivers go through the same routine:
digging through the glovebox, door pockets, or even using a credit card (a terrible idea) to clear ice off the windshield.

Škoda’s solution is far more elegant:

  • Open the fuel flap
  • Remove a small, purpose-built ice scraper
  • Use it immediately on windshields and windows
  • Snap it back into place when done

No hunting. No mess. No frozen fingers rummaging through the car interior.

And it’s not just a scraper it’s designed as part of a system.

The Ice Scraper That Measures Tire Tread Depth

https://images.openai.com/static-rsc-4/WprcnG50Dym6BRkWBskIcsuhUz522qukssUMujNq6l8eYmg2cKDepgBJhdggRT4hngFsrsQy8mkJjIFiwxHoq-NXJNktSkBBX29KQ8kPqMLBSBI5u4RrGpWhfK1dUrJWBhfRs98yHR1EUnJA4JrUQTPQ7-IonifIMhQblJgRK-ygYnlO7lXffUIxHjXN1skW?purpose=fullsize

Here’s where Škoda goes from “useful” to “surprisingly thoughtful.”

The same ice scraper also includes a built-in tire tread depth gauge.

It works through simple measurement grooves molded into the plastic:

  • You press it into the tire tread
  • The markings show remaining tread depth
  • Helps you quickly judge wear and safety
  • Useful before long winter trips or MOT checks

This tiny addition turns a winter ice tool into a year-round safety checker.

It’s a perfect example of Škoda’s philosophy:
don’t add more objects add more function to the ones you already have.

Why These Features Matter More Than They Seem

What makes these ideas interesting isn’t complexity it’s restraint.

Most modern cars increasingly rely on digital solutions: touchscreen reminders, app alerts, voice assistants. Škoda instead focuses on physical, immediate, no-thinking-required usefulness.

These features share a common design mindset:

  • Solve problems people actually have, not imagined ones
  • Put tools exactly where they’re needed
  • Combine multiple functions into one object
  • Remove friction from everyday routines

It’s engineering that respects forgetfulness, bad weather, and busy mornings.

The “Simply Clever” Philosophy in Action

These small inventions are part of what Škoda calls its “Simply Clever” approach: practical details hidden throughout the car.

And while they don’t scream for attention in advertisements, they quietly build loyalty among owners who discover them in real life.

Because once you’ve used:

  • an umbrella that’s always in the door
  • an ice scraper that’s always where you need it
  • a tool that also checks your tyre safety

…it becomes hard to go back to cars that don’t think that way.

Final Thought

Škoda’s genius isn’t about reinventing the car it’s about noticing the boring, annoying moments of everyday driving and quietly fixing them.

No drama. No spectacle. Just small, smart answers hidden in plain sight.

And in a world full of complicated technology, that kind of simplicity is what makes it memorable.
