When people hear the words “electric car,” they often imagine a vehicle powered entirely by a huge battery pack hidden beneath the floor. After all, electric vehicles (EVs) do not use petrol engines, fuel pumps, or traditional alternators. So it may come as a surprise that almost every modern electric car still contains a small 12-volt battery the same type of battery found in conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.
Why would a car that already has a massive high-voltage battery need a smaller battery at all?
The answer is that the two batteries do completely different jobs. The large battery moves the car, while the small 12V battery keeps many essential systems alive. Without it, even the most advanced electric vehicle may not be able to start.

The Big Battery Is Not Enough
Electric vehicles are equipped with a high-voltage traction battery, usually operating at hundreds of volts. This is the powerful battery pack that supplies energy to the electric motors and allows the vehicle to travel long distances.
However, many of the car’s everyday functions do not require huge amounts of power. Things like:
- Door locks
- Interior lights
- Dashboard displays
- Security systems
- Airbags
- Sensors
- Cameras
- Infotainment systems
- Vehicle computers
are designed to run on a low-voltage electrical system.
That is where the 12V battery comes in.
Instead of using the enormous main battery to power every small electronic device, EV manufacturers use a separate 12V system because it is safer, more efficient, and based on technology that has been proven for decades.
The 12V Battery Wakes Up the Electric Car
One of the most important jobs of the 12V battery is starting the vehicle’s electronic systems.
In a petrol or diesel car, turning the key or pressing the start button activates the starter motor, which spins the engine. Electric cars do not have starter motors because their electric motors can begin turning instantly.
However, the vehicle’s computers still need to “wake up” before the high-voltage battery can deliver power.
When you unlock an EV, sit inside, or press the start button, the 12V battery powers the control modules that communicate with the high-voltage battery. Once the car’s systems confirm everything is safe, a connection is made and the main battery pack can provide energy to drive the vehicle.
In simple terms:
The big battery powers the journey.
The small battery powers the system that allows the journey to begin.
What Happens If the 12V Battery Dies?
A common misconception is that an electric car cannot have a dead battery. After all, it has a huge battery pack, right?
But if the 12V battery fails, the car may behave much like a traditional vehicle with a flat battery.
Possible symptoms include:
- The doors may not unlock
- The dashboard may remain off
- The vehicle may refuse to start
- Charging may not begin
- Warning messages may appear
- Electronic systems may stop responding
Even if the main battery has plenty of charge, the car may not be able to access it without the 12V system working correctly.
Some EV owners have experienced the strange situation of having a vehicle showing a 70% or 80% charge but being unable to drive because the small battery has failed.
Why Not Just Use the Main Battery?
A logical question is: why not remove the 12V battery completely and run everything from the large battery pack?
There are several reasons.
1. Safety
The high-voltage battery contains a huge amount of energy. Keeping everyday electronics separate from that system reduces complexity and improves safety.
A low-voltage system is easier to manage for components such as locks, emergency systems, and control computers.
2. Reliability
The automotive industry has decades of experience with 12V electrical systems. Manufacturers already have reliable components, wiring designs, and safety standards built around this voltage.
Changing everything would require redesigning almost every electrical component in a vehicle.
3. Emergency Operation
The 12V system can continue powering critical safety features even when the high-voltage system is disconnected.
For example, after an accident, safety systems may need to operate independently while the high-voltage battery is isolated.

How Does the 12V Battery Recharge in an EV?
Traditional cars recharge their 12V battery using an alternator connected to the petrol or diesel engine.
Electric cars do not have engines or alternators, so they use a different method.
EVs use a device called a DC-to-DC converter.
This converter takes electricity from the high-voltage battery and reduces it to a lower voltage suitable for charging the 12V battery and running the vehicle’s electrical systems.
When the vehicle is switched on or charging, the high-voltage battery can keep the 12V battery topped up.
Electric Cars Can Still Need Jump Starts
Many people are surprised to learn that EVs can sometimes require a jump start.
However, the jump is not used to start an engine. Instead, it provides enough power to revive the 12V electrical system so the vehicle’s computers can activate.
Once the system is awake, the high-voltage battery can usually take over.
Some electric vehicles even include a small emergency access point under the bonnet or elsewhere on the vehicle to allow the 12V system to be restored.
Do EV 12V Batteries Last Longer?
The answer is: sometimes, but not always.
Because EVs do not experience the same engine vibrations, heat cycles, and heavy electrical demands as combustion vehicles, their 12V batteries can often have an easier life.
However, they still age.
A typical 12V battery may last several years depending on:
- Climate conditions
- Vehicle usage patterns
- How often the car is driven
- How much power electronic systems consume while parked
- Battery quality
Modern EVs contain many computers that remain partially active even when the vehicle is parked, monitoring security systems, charging schedules, and remote features. This constant low-level activity can place demands on the 12V battery.
The Future: Moving Beyond 12 Volts
As vehicles become more advanced, some manufacturers are exploring higher-voltage low-power systems.
For example, some modern vehicles are beginning to move toward 48-volt electrical systems, which can support more efficient electronics and advanced features.
However, the 12V battery remains common because it is simple, inexpensive, reliable, and familiar to technicians around the world.
Even as electric cars become more sophisticated, this small battery continues to play a surprisingly important role.
The Small Battery With a Big Responsibility
The 12V battery in an electric vehicle may look insignificant compared with a battery pack weighing hundreds of kilograms, but it performs a crucial job.
It does not move the car down the road, but it allows the car’s brain to communicate, its safety systems to function, and its main battery to come alive.
So the next time someone says, “Electric cars don’t have batteries like normal cars,” remember the reality:
Electric cars have a massive battery to drive them and a small 12V battery that helps everything else happen.
Sometimes, the smallest component has one of the biggest responsibilities.
