When someone says:

"I have 16-inch wheels and I want 20-inch wheels."

they are only talking about one measurement: the diameter of the wheel.

All of these matter.

One of the most important things when upsizing wheels is maintaining a suitable overall tyre diameter.

Your original 16-inch wheel and tyre have a total diameter.

When you install a 20-inch wheel, the tyre sidewall normally needs to become substantially shorter so that the complete wheel-and-tyre diameter remains close to the original.

Think of it like this:

Small wheel + tall tyre sidewall = large wheel + short tyre sidewall
