BMW Wants to Delete the Instrument Cluster And It Might Change Cars Forever

Image
For more than a century, every car has followed the same basic idea: You sit behind a steering wheel. You look through it. And directly behind it lives a cluster of gauges. Speed. Range. RPM. Warnings. Information. That rectangle whether mechanical needles or digital screens became one of the most recognizable objects in automotive design. Subscribe Enjoying my DIY car content? BMW is now asking a radical question: What if the instrument cluster simply disappeared? With the arrival of the Neue Klasse generation, BMW is replacing the traditional driver display with something that feels closer to science fiction than automotive evolution: a panoramic projection stretching across the base of the windshield, turning the glass itself into the primary interface...

Changan Deepal S07: The Chinese Tech-SUV That Could Disrupt the UK EV Market

The UK electric SUV market is getting crowded, but every so often a model appears that feels like it’s playing a completely different game. The Changan Deepal S07 (from Changan Automobile’s premium NEV brand Deepal) is one of those cars blending futuristic tech, bold design, and surprisingly flexible powertrain options that could appeal strongly to UK drivers looking beyond mainstream EVs.

This isn’t just another electric crossover. It’s a statement piece with tech ambitions that rival premium European rivals… often at a much lower expected price.

The Chinese Tech-SUV That Could Disrupt the UK EV Market

Design: “Cyber Minimalism” Meets Family SUV Practicality

The Deepal S07 sits in the mid-size SUV category, roughly competing with the Tesla Model Y, Skoda Enyaq, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

But visually, it leans more futuristic:

  • Frameless doors and flush handles
  • A coupe-style rear roofline (sporty but still practical)
  • Full-width LED light bar front and rear
  • Aerodynamic sculpting designed to reduce drag and boost range

It’s the kind of SUV that looks like it belongs in a concept showroom yet it’s already in production markets.

Powertrains: EV + Range Extender (EREV) Choice

One of the most interesting aspects of the Deepal S07 is that it doesn’t force a single electric strategy.

1. Fully Electric (BEV)

  • Battery options (market-dependent): ~66 kWh to ~80 kWh
  • Estimated range: ~500–620 km (CLTC cycle; lower in real UK conditions)
  • Rear-wheel drive and dual-motor AWD variants in some markets
  • Fast charging: typically 30–80% in ~30 minutes (DC fast charge)

2. Range-Extended EV (EREV)

This is where things get especially unusual for the UK market:

  • 1.5L petrol engine acts only as a generator
  • Wheels always driven by electric motors
  • Combined range often claimed above 900–1000 km
  • Perfect for drivers worried about charging infrastructure

For UK buyers, the EREV version could be the “no-compromise EV transition” option.

Trims & Equipment (Expected Structure for UK Launch)

While exact UK trim names aren’t confirmed, global positioning suggests something like:

Entry Trim (Core / Pro)

  • Large central infotainment display (~15.6-inch rotating screen in some versions)
  • Digital driver display
  • Basic driver assistance suite (adaptive cruise, lane assist)
  • Keyless entry + smartphone integration

Mid Trim (Max / Luxury)

  • AR Head-Up Display (Augmented Reality navigation overlay)
  • Premium audio system
  • Heated & ventilated seats
  • Ambient lighting system
  • Enhanced ADAS (highway assist, traffic jam assist)

Top Trim (Ultra / AWD Performance)

  • Dual motor AWD system
  • Advanced lidar-based driver assistance (in select markets)
  • Full panoramic roof
  • Premium leather-style interior materials
  • Enhanced suspension tuning for European roads

Colours: Bold, Modern, and Slightly Unusual

The Deepal S07 doesn’t stick to boring SUV colours. Expect a palette that includes:

  • Glacier White Pearl
  • Midnight Black Metallic
  • Electric Blue (signature “tech” colour)
  • Matte Grey (very cyber aesthetic)
  • Sunset Copper / Orange tones in select markets
  • Two-tone roof combinations on higher trims

These colours are clearly aimed at younger EV buyers who want personality, not just practicality.

The “Unusual Tech” Angle

Where the Deepal S07 really stands out is its tech-first philosophy:

  • Rotating central touchscreen (landscape ↔ portrait style in some versions)
  • AR-based navigation projected onto the road view
  • Intelligent voice assistant system
  • Vehicle-to-load (V2L) power export (camping / tools / gadgets)
  • High-level autonomous driving features (market dependent approval)

It feels more like a software-defined car than a traditional SUV.

Expected UK Pricing (If It Arrives)

Nothing is officially confirmed for the UK yet, but based on European EV positioning:

  • Entry BEV: ~£35,000 – £40,000
  • Mid trim: ~£40,000 – £45,000
  • AWD / top spec: ~£45,000 – £50,000+
  • EREV variants: potentially slightly higher due to dual system complexity

That places it directly against the Tesla Model Y, but with more physical tech features included as standard.

Why UK Buyers Should Pay Attention

The Deepal S07 is interesting because it challenges three assumptions at once:

  1. You don’t need to pay premium German prices for advanced tech
  2. EVs don’t have to mean range anxiety anymore (EREV option)
  3. Chinese EV design is now fully competing with global leaders

It’s not just “another EV from China” — it’s part of a new wave of highly competitive, tech-loaded SUVs aiming straight at Europe.

And If You Want the Real-World Detail…

Specs and brochures are one thing but seeing the car in real measurement terms is another.

If you’re curious about practical usability, especially real boot space measured in centimetres, I’ve shown exactly that in my YouTube video on the Changan Deepal S07. It gives a clear real-world perspective you won’t get from spec sheets alone.

👉 Check out my other videos to see the boot space properly measured in CM especially useful if you’re comparing it with Skoda Enyaq, or Hyundai Ioniq 5.
