BMW Wants to Delete the Instrument Cluster And It Might Change Cars Forever

Image
For more than a century, every car has followed the same basic idea: You sit behind a steering wheel. You look through it. And directly behind it lives a cluster of gauges. Speed. Range. RPM. Warnings. Information. That rectangle whether mechanical needles or digital screens became one of the most recognizable objects in automotive design. Subscribe Enjoying my DIY car content? BMW is now asking a radical question: What if the instrument cluster simply disappeared? With the arrival of the Neue Klasse generation, BMW is replacing the traditional driver display with something that feels closer to science fiction than automotive evolution: a panoramic projection stretching across the base of the windshield, turning the glass itself into the primary interface...

The all-new Vauxhall Frontera. Read more…

The all-new Vauxhall Frontera marks a major return of a once-iconic nameplate, but in a completely modern form. Instead of its rugged, old-school off-roader roots, the 2024 Frontera has been reinvented as a compact family SUV designed for affordability, efficiency, and everyday practicality. It sits in Vauxhall’s lineup as a fresh alternative to the outgoing Crossland, offering both hybrid and fully electric options, making it one of the most versatile budget-friendly SUVs in the UK market today.

Design & Exterior

The 2024 Frontera follows Vauxhall’s latest “Vizor” design language, featuring a bold black front panel that integrates the grille and headlights into a single sleek unit. The overall look is boxy and upright, giving it a strong road presence and maximising interior space.

Key exterior highlights include:

  • Sharp LED lighting signature front and rear
  • Chunky wheel arches for a rugged SUV stance
  • Black roof and gloss black mirror caps (on higher trims)
  • 16–17 inch alloy wheel options depending on trim
  • Dark-tinted rear windows on GS and above

Despite its budget positioning, the Frontera manages to look more premium than its price tag suggests.

Engines & Powertrains

One of the biggest strengths of the Frontera is its dual-energy strategy: you can choose between hybrid efficiency or full electric driving.

Fully Electric versions

  • 44kWh battery – 113PS
    • Range: ~189 miles (WLTP)
  • 54kWh battery – 113PS
    • Range: up to ~253 miles (WLTP)
  • DC fast charging up to 100kW (rapid top-ups)

Hybrid versions

  • 1.2L petrol hybrid – 110PS automatic
  • 1.2L petrol hybrid – 145PS automatic

The hybrid models focus on smooth urban driving and lower running costs, while the EV versions aim for zero-emission commuting with decent real-world range for the price bracket.

Trims Available

The Frontera is designed to keep things simple, with three main trim levels:

1. Design (Entry Level)

  • LED headlights
  • Cruise control
  • Rear parking sensors & camera
  • Dual 10-inch digital displays
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Manual air conditioning

This is the “value-focused” version, ideal for budget buyers who still want modern tech.

2. GS (Mid Spec)

  • Upgraded alloy wheels
  • Body-coloured bumpers
  • Front parking sensors
  • Climate control
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Enhanced interior finishes

GS is expected to be the most popular trim thanks to its balance of price and features.

3. Ultimate (Top Trim, where available)

  • Premium interior upgrades
  • Advanced driver assistance systems
  • Heated seats and steering wheel (pack dependent)
  • Additional comfort and styling enhancements

This version focuses on comfort and luxury touches while staying under typical premium SUV pricing.

Colours Available

The Frontera offers a surprisingly stylish colour palette for a budget SUV:

  • Arctic White (solid, no extra cost)
  • Carbon Black (metallic)
  • Effect Blue (metallic)
  • Khaki Green (metallic)
  • Canyon Orange (special metallic)
  • Crystal Silver (metallic)

Two-tone combinations with a black roof are also available on selected trims, giving it a sportier look.

Approx Price (UK Market)

The Frontera is positioned as one of the most affordable new SUVs in its class.

  • Starting price: from ~£23,495 (entry EV / Design trim)
  • Hybrid models: ~£24,800–£26,500 depending on power
  • Top-spec EV (54kWh): up to ~£27,500–£28,000

Even the highest-spec versions remain under £30,000, making it very competitive in the small SUV market.

Practicality & Space

One of the strongest selling points is interior space. The Frontera is designed with families in mind:

  • Spacious rear seating for adults
  • Large, boxy boot for luggage
  • Optional 7-seat configuration (on selected hybrid models)
  • Flat floor layout improves comfort and usability

This makes it especially attractive for growing families who want SUV practicality without premium pricing.

Final Thoughts

The 2024 Frontera is not trying to be a luxury SUV it’s built to be a smart, affordable, and practical everyday car. With multiple powertrains, modern tech, and strong value positioning, it stands out as one of Vauxhall’s most important recent launches.

It may not be the most powerful or premium SUV on the market, but for buyers focused on price, efficiency, and space, it hits a very sweet spot.
