BMW Wants to Delete the Instrument Cluster And It Might Change Cars Forever

Image
For more than a century, every car has followed the same basic idea: You sit behind a steering wheel. You look through it. And directly behind it lives a cluster of gauges. Speed. Range. RPM. Warnings. Information. That rectangle whether mechanical needles or digital screens became one of the most recognizable objects in automotive design. Subscribe Enjoying my DIY car content? BMW is now asking a radical question: What if the instrument cluster simply disappeared? With the arrival of the Neue Klasse generation, BMW is replacing the traditional driver display with something that feels closer to science fiction than automotive evolution: a panoramic projection stretching across the base of the windshield, turning the glass itself into the primary interface...

Nissan Qashqai e‑POWER – Technology, One-Foot Driving & Full Overview

The Nissan Qashqai e-POWER represents a different approach to hybrid SUVs. Instead of using the petrol engine to directly drive the wheels like most hybrids, Nissan designed a system where the electric motor alone drives the wheels, while the petrol engine acts mainly as a generator producing electricity. This creates a driving feel closer to a fully electric vehicle while still using petrol for long journeys.

In this article, we’ll explore the unique one-foot driving system, engine options, trim levels, colours, and why this hybrid SUV has become so popular.

A Different Type of Hybrid: How e-POWER Works

Unlike conventional hybrids, the Qashqai e-POWER uses a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that generates electricity rather than directly powering the wheels. The electricity feeds a 190 hp electric motor which actually drives the car.

Key advantages of this setup include:

  • Instant electric-motor torque
  • Smooth acceleration with no traditional gearbox
  • Lower fuel consumption and emissions
  • Quiet driving experience similar to EVs

The system also uses regenerative braking, converting braking energy back into electricity to recharge the battery.

The Unusual Feature: One-Foot Driving (e-Pedal Step)

One of the most interesting technologies in the Qashqai e-POWER is e-Pedal Step, sometimes referred to as one-foot driving.

How it works

With e-Pedal Step activated:

  • Press the accelerator → the car accelerates
  • Release the accelerator → the car slows down using regenerative braking

This reduces the need to move your foot between the accelerator and brake pedal, especially in city traffic or stop-start driving.

However, it’s important to know:

  • It slows the car significantly but usually doesn’t bring it to a complete stop, so the brake pedal is still needed at very low speeds.

The result is a driving experience that feels much closer to an electric vehicle.

Engine Options in the Qashqai Range

The Qashqai lineup offers several powertrain choices depending on market and trim.

1. e-POWER Hybrid

  • 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol generator
  • Electric motor drives the wheels
  • Around 190 hp and 330 Nm torque
  • Automatic single-speed electric drive

2. Mild-Hybrid Petrol

  • 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine
  • Available with manual or automatic transmission
  • Power outputs around 138–158 hp

The e-POWER version is designed for drivers who want electric-like driving without needing to charge the car.

Trim Levels

The Qashqai e-POWER is available in several trims, each offering different equipment and technology levels.

Typical trims include:

  • Accenta Premium – entry model with strong standard features
  • N-Connecta – additional technology and connectivity
  • N-Design – sportier styling
  • Tekna – premium interior and advanced safety
  • Tekna+ – top-of-the-range luxury specification

Higher trims often include features such as:

  • panoramic glass roof
  • premium sound system
  • advanced driver assistance systems
  • larger alloy wheels

Exterior Colours

Depending on market and trim, the Qashqai usually comes in a range of modern colours such as:

  • Pearl White
  • Ceramic Grey
  • Magnetic Blue
  • Gun Metallic
  • Flame Red
  • Black Metallic

Some versions also offer two-tone colour combinations with a contrasting black roof for a sportier appearance.

Practicality & Boot Space

The Qashqai is designed as a family-friendly crossover.

Key practical features include:

  • Up to 504 litres of boot space with seats up
  • Up to 1,447 litres with the rear seats folded
  • Flexible cargo floor and wide opening boot

This makes it ideal for family trips, shopping, and everyday practicality.

Why the Qashqai e-POWER Stands Out

The Qashqai e-POWER offers a rare mix of:

  • electric-like driving
  • petrol convenience
  • modern SUV practicality
  • advanced driver technology

For many drivers, it’s a perfect bridge between traditional petrol cars and full electric vehicles.
