Modern LED headlights have transformed night driving. They are brighter, sharper, longer-lasting, and more energy-efficient than traditional halogen bulbs. Car manufacturers say they improve visibility and help drivers spot hazards earlier. But for many road users, there is a growing problem that is impossible to ignore:

Ask drivers about night-time glare, and opinions quickly become heated. Many say that meeting an oncoming vehicle with powerful LED headlights can feel like staring directly into a torch. For a few seconds, the road disappears, mirrors fill with light, and drivers may struggle to see pedestrians, cyclists, road markings, or even the edge of the road.

Some motorists believe the situation has become so bad that driving at night is no longer comfortable.

“I don’t mind bright headlights when I’m the one using them,” one driver might say, “but when every car coming towards me looks like it has full beam on, something has gone wrong.”

Others strongly disagree. They argue that brighter headlights are a major safety improvement. Better lighting can help drivers see further ahead, react sooner, and avoid hazards that older headlights may not reveal until it is too late.

So who is right?

Why Do LED Headlights Feel So Bright?

LED headlights are different from older halogen lamps. Their light is often whiter and more focused, creating a sharper contrast between dark roads and illuminated areas. That can make the light appear much more intense, even when the headlights are operating within legal limits.

But brightness may not be the only issue.

Modern vehicles are often taller than older cars. SUVs, crossovers, and pickup-style vehicles can place their headlights higher above the road. When one of these vehicles approaches a smaller car, its headlights may shine directly into the other driver’s eye line.

Road conditions can make the problem worse. A hill, a dip, a bend, or an uneven road surface may cause the beam to appear to flash upward. A driver may think the approaching vehicle is repeatedly using full beam, even when the headlights are set normally.

Then there is headlight alignment. If headlights are aimed too high, even a legally approved lighting system can create uncomfortable glare. A damaged suspension system, heavy load, incorrect adjustment, or aftermarket modification may also change the direction of the beam.

For drivers on the receiving end, however, the cause may not matter. The result is the same: a bright light that makes the road harder to see.

“They Help Me See – But Stop Others Seeing”

This is the argument at the centre of the debate.

LED headlights may improve visibility for the driver using them, but what happens if that improvement comes at the expense of everyone else?

Some motorists say modern headlights create a safety contradiction. The driver behind the wheel of the newer vehicle may have a clearer view of the road, while the driver coming in the opposite direction is temporarily dazzled.

That raises an uncomfortable question:

Should headlights be judged only by how well they illuminate the road ahead, or also by how much glare they create for other road users?

Many drivers believe the second question has not received enough attention.

Older motorists often report that glare is especially difficult. People with certain eye conditions may also be more sensitive to bright light. But complaints are not limited to older drivers. Younger motorists regularly describe LED glare as distracting, tiring, and frustrating.

Some say they avoid driving at night when possible. Others say they look toward the left edge of the road rather than directly at approaching headlights. A few argue that the problem is now so common that drivers have simply been expected to tolerate it.

But should they?

Are Drivers Confusing Bright Dipped Beams With Full Beam?

Not everyone accepts that LED headlights are the problem.

Supporters point out that modern lighting systems are designed to provide better visibility without causing excessive glare. They argue that many complaints may be caused by incorrectly aimed headlights, poorly fitted replacement bulbs, unusually tall vehicles, or drivers mistakenly assuming that bright white light must be full beam.

They also note that newer cars may use advanced systems that automatically adjust the beam. Some can change the illuminated area depending on the road, traffic, and surrounding conditions.

From this viewpoint, blaming LED technology itself may be too simple.

“Would drivers really want to return to weaker headlights?” supporters ask. “Better lighting can make night driving safer, especially on unlit roads.”

That is a fair point. Few drivers would choose poor visibility. The real debate may not be whether headlights should be bright, but how bright is too bright and who decides?

Is the Problem Getting Worse?

Many motorists believe it is.

Cars are becoming more advanced, and lighting technology is developing quickly. Headlights can now adapt to corners, respond to traffic, and illuminate wider areas of the road. These improvements may be useful, but they also make some drivers wonder whether technology is moving faster than real-world testing.

A headlight may perform well in controlled conditions yet still cause discomfort on narrow roads, uneven streets, wet surfaces, or in busy traffic.

Rain can make glare appear stronger as light reflects from the road. Wet windscreens and mirrors may scatter light. In towns, drivers can face a constant stream of bright headlights from several directions.

The result is not always temporary discomfort. Some motorists say repeated glare causes eye strain, headaches, stress, or reduced confidence behind the wheel.

Others argue that these complaints are being exaggerated and that brighter headlights are simply more noticeable because drivers are used to older technology.

So is the problem real or are we becoming more sensitive to modern lighting?

Should There Be Stricter Rules?

Some drivers want tighter limits on headlight brightness and stronger testing of real-world glare. They believe vehicles should be assessed not only in laboratories but also on ordinary roads, with different vehicle heights and realistic traffic conditions.

Others want more frequent checks to make sure headlights are correctly aligned. A vehicle may leave the factory with properly adjusted lights, but alignment can change over time.

There are also calls for clearer rules around aftermarket LED conversions. Replacing a halogen bulb with a brighter LED bulb may change the way light is distributed, especially if the original headlight unit was not designed for it.

But stricter rules could create another problem. If regulations reduce headlight performance too much, drivers on dark rural roads may lose valuable visibility.

The challenge is finding a balance:

Enough light to see danger clearly but not so much that other drivers cannot see.

The Question Every Driver Has an Opinion On

Modern LED headlights may be one of the most controversial changes in everyday driving.

Some drivers see them as a major safety improvement. Others see them as a growing road hazard. One person’s clearer view may be another person’s moment of blindness.

Perhaps the debate is not really about LEDs. Perhaps it is about vehicle design, headlight height, beam direction, road conditions, and whether modern cars are being designed with every road user in mind.

But one thing is clear: drivers have strong opinions.
